Dr. Moti Gigi is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Sapir Academic College. His work explores the intersection of space, class, and identity, with a particular focus on marginality, ethnic power relations, and center–periphery dynamics in Israeli society.
His academic journey began with an M.A. thesis at Tel Aviv University, investigating the role of public colleges in Israel’s higher education system, with Sapir College as a case study. His Ph.D. examined the tense, historically layered relations between the development town of Sderot and the surrounding kibbutzim. This body of work has evolved into multiple publications, including:

Currently, he is working on two new books:
A scholarly monograph on development town–kibbutz relations with de Gruyter, and a co-edited volume (with Dr. Itzik Sporta) marking 30 years of public colleges in Israel.
Dr. Gigi’s work is deeply rooted in his biography and community. Born in Sderot and a first-generation academic, he actively bridges academia and civic life. He has served as Chair of the Student Union and the Faculty Organization at Sapir, sat on its board of trustees and governing council, and is a member of the board of the Sderot Cinematheque. He has also served on the IDF radio selection committee.
He is a graduate of leading leadership programs including the Mandel School for Educational Leadership, the Gvanim program (SF Federation), and Elka. His approach brings together research, education, and public engagement—from the periphery, for the periphery.
ד”ר מוטי גיגי הוא מרצה בכיר לסוציולוגיה (Assistant Professor) במכללה האקדמית ספיר, חוקר את הזיקות בין מרחב, מעמד וזהות. מחקריו מבקשים לחשוף את הדינמיקות המובְנות של שוליות, הדרה והגמוניה – במיוחד במפגש בין מרכז לפריפריה, יהדות מזרח וקהילות גבול.
דרכו המחקרית החלה בעבודת תזה באוניברסיטת תל אביב, שעסקה במעמדן של המכללות הציבוריות בישראל ובמקרה הבוחן של ספיר. עבודת הדוקטורט שלו התמקדה ביחסים הטעונים בין עיירת הפיתוח שדרות לקיבוצי שער-הנגב. מחקרים אלו התפתחו למאמרים וספרים, בהם:

כיום הוא שוקד על שני ספרים נוספים:
מונוגרפיה עיונית על יחסי עיירות פיתוח–קיבוצים בהוצאת de Gruyter, וספר ערוך (יחד עם ד”ר איציק ספורטא) לציון 30 שנה למכללות הציבוריות בישראל.
גיגי הוא לא רק חוקר של פריפריה – הוא פועל בתוכה ומתוכה. הוא עצמו בן שדרות, דור ראשון להשכלה גבוהה, ופעיל בעשייה חברתית ותרבותית: כיהן כיו”ר אגודת הסטודנטים וכיו”ר ארגון הסגל במכללת ספיר, היה חבר בחבר הנאמנים ובוועד המנהל שלה, חבר הנהלת סינמטק שדרות, וחבר בוועדת המיונים לגלי צה”ל. הוא בוגר תוכניות מנהיגות חברתית כמו מנדל, “גוונים” ואלכ”א, ומשלב בין מחקר, הוראה ומעורבות קהילתית.
